CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER

In this first chapter, a detailed introduction about the computer is given in simple words. Charles Babbage’s work, advancement in the computer during 1950’s and 1960’s, five computer generations, analog and digital computers, pocket, laptop, and microcomputers and supercomputers are depicted. An introduction to computers, the history of computer hardware, software and programming languages, and information technology.
 
Data can be stored, retrieved, and processed by computers. Originally, computers were humans (human computers) who performed numerical calculations with mechanical calculators, such as the abacus and slide rule.
 
 Later, the term was applied to mechanical devices as they replaced human computers. Today the term ‘computer’ is used for an extensive range of devices capable of performing mathematical calculations, storing large amounts of data, playing music and video files, displaying images and photos, sending emails, and so on.
 
Computers have existed for most of human history. Primitive computing devices have been used for thousands of years. Early computing devices include the abacus, slide rule (invented by William Oughtred in 1622), Napier’s bones (developed in 1617), and Pascaline (invented by Blaise Pascal in 1642), Leibniz wheel (designed by Gottfried Leibniz in 1673).
 
An average computer can perform billions of calculations in one second. It can store millions of characters of information, and it can communicate with other similar machines all over the world.
 
Computers are being designed to use less power than before and are being made smaller to be carried around easily and fit into small spaces. They are being used in homes, offices, schools, hospitals, factories and even on board airplanes!
