Pakistan was not created by accident. It resulted from a long and arduous process in which millions of Muslims made great sacrifices to achieve their goal. They aimed to have a homeland where they could live according to the tenets of Islam, free from Hindu domination and British rule.

The struggle for Pakistan was based on two fundamental factors. The first was the historical role of Islam in South Asia, a role that continued for about a thousand years.

In the subcontinent, Muslims were never a minority; even after partition in 1947, when Pakistan was carved out of India, there were more Muslims in India than in Pakistan.’

The second factor was the failure of the Hindus and Muslims to evolve an effective political partnership that would enable both communities to work together for the freedom and progress of their country.

As early as 1909, Allama Iqbal discussed having a separate Muslim state within India. In 1940, Muhammad Ali Jinnah gave substance to this idea by demanding the establishment of an independent homeland for the Muslims within India.

This demand was known as the Lahore Resolution (also called the Pakistan Resolution), and its object was achieved on August 14, 1947, when Pakistan came into being as a sovereign state.
