  • Vectors and Equilibrium
  • Vectors are forces with a direction and a magnitude. A force, like gravity or friction, can also be thought of as a vector. The force of gravity on the earth pulls "downward", so it has a direction. The strength of gravity determines how much it acts on an object - its magnitude.
  • A force can make an object move in its direction. If you push someone from behind, they move forward. If you push them to the side, they move sideways. This is why vectors are useful in describing motion: they show both direction and magnitude.
  • Equilibrium occurs when all forces acting on an object cancel each other out. At equilibrium, the sum of all the forces acting on an object is zero. Objects at equilibrium will not accelerate; their velocity will not change.
  • In natural equilibrium, each part of the system is in balance with every other part. Equilibrium is like a ball resting on a hill. A ball at the top of a hill is not in equilibrium, because there are no forces acting on it. But if you push it up the hill and then let go, gravity pulls it down until it reaches a point where the slope of the hill balances out the force of gravity: that's equilibrium.
