Chapter 1 – Overview of Computer Systems

This Chapter 1 talks about:

Introduction to computers

The goal of Computer Science is to gain a deep understanding of computer systems and networks. This means that we must understand the basics of how computers work.

Specifically, we will learn about data representation and computer arithmetic (binary numbers, boolean algebra, and logic gates).  Finally, we will look at how these concepts apply to programming languages and operating systems (processes, compiler design, threads and concurrency).

The modern computer is based on an intellectual breakthrough that gave us a new way to think about logic. Until the late 1930s logic had always been thought of in one of two ways: either as an abstract mathematical system, or as a kind of language that could be used to describe human reasoning.

This was entirely new. It was not simply a new kind of object (a machine), but rather a new way to think about objects; specifically, a new way to formalize and manipulate rules. The modern digital computer is essentially just such a symbol-manipulating device, capable of executing any rule that can be represented algorithmically.

And since any logical argument can be represented algorithmically, this means that computers are essentially powerful enough to execute any logical argument whatsoever – which in turn means they’re capable of performing any deductive task we might ask them to perform.
