Insulators, such as plastic, are objects that do not allow thermal energy to easily move through them.

 Insulators, such as plastic, are objects that do not allow thermal energy to easily move through them. Even if the temperature of an insulator rises, it will not easily transmit thermal energy to where it is cooler. A good example of this is a cold drink in a plastic cup on a hot day; the cup will be warm to the touch, but the drink inside it will remain cool for a long time.

Convection is a method of transferring thermal energy through liquids and gases. It occurs when the warmer particles of a liquid or gas expand and rise above their cooler counterparts, which then sink back down to take their place. The rising and sinking of the particles creates currents in the gas or liquid, allowing thermal energy to be transferred from one place to another.

Most everyday objects are good conductors of heat and are therefore good at transferring thermal energy. Metals are particularly good at conducting heat; you can feel this if you hold one end of a metal rod that has been heated up in a fire. Because metals conduct heat so well, they can also be used as insulators by using them as casings for electrical wires. This protects people from being electrocuted by preventing heat from flowing from the wire’s current into their body.
