History:
The University of Punjab was established on 14 October 1882 by the vote of the Senate in Simla. It was the fourth higher learning institute established by the British authorities and the first university that was both a teaching and examining organization. Dr G. W. Leitner was the first Registrar.

Prof. A. C. Woolner and had been the Vice-Chancellor from 1928-1936. To commemorate his dedication, his status is still erected at the Allama Iqbal campus.
Through the partition of the sub-continent in 9147, a majority of non-Muslim teaching faculty migrated to India, their void and introduction of new academic departments were initiated by Dr. Umar Hayat Malik.
He was also the first Vice-Chancellor after independence.
