In Pakistan, the Number of Girl Schools Has Been Declining

Considering the size and diversity of Pakistan, it's no surprise that there is some disparity in development. In fact, according to the Mouza Census 2020 issued by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, only 64% of rural areas have primary schools for girls. It can be attributed at least partially to their remote location away from population centers or low per capita income levels, among other factors such as lack of access roads necessary transportation system.

The report highlights a worrying decline in educational facilities for girls. Only one out of five rural areas had primary schools full of female students by 2020, and this figure declines even more dramatically when looking at 2008-2010.

The troubling statistics for girls' middle schools differ between rural and urban areas. Only 30% of the country had these types in 2008, but this number declined to 25 by 2020. Conversely, there has been an improvement with high/higher secondary school education levels--only nine percent lived on farms back then versus 11%.

The statistics reveal that girls in rural areas have the highest facility of primary schools, 78%, followed by Federal Capital at 65%. The Islamabad area has 35% middle school for female students while Punjab houses 31%, KPK 25%, SINDH 21%. Finally, there's only 11% each from Balochistan province.

When it comes to rural areas, the federal capital of Pakistan has much more high and higher secondary schools for girls than anywhere else. In 26% percent of these rural zones across Punjab, there are only one or two options in this category with an additional 12%. However, Balochistan is almost entirely without such facilities, accounting for just five percent of all regions surveyed here.

It has been a long battle for girls to get equal treatment and opportunities as boys. With the number of rural areas with primary schools increasing by 2020 over 2008 levels, now is a great time to ensure that all children have access to education no matter their circumstances.

A new report on global statistics shows how we can do just that. Just by investing more money into educational facilities which will give us better results overall (80% fewer dropouts), secondly enabling both genders equally without discrimination, so every child has an equal opportunity at success.
