Federal Medical and Dental College is a Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU), Islamabad. With campuses in Islamabad and Lahore, it enjoys the status of the first public-sector medical college in the capital of Pakistan. A total of 100 seats are allocated for MBBS each year with a set quota of reserved seats for all provinces and some international students.
Sounds good so far? Wait for the cherry on top! The most prestigious and unprecedented Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) is the main affiliated hospital. But since the vacancies for FMDC graduates at PIMS are limited, another hospital (Federal General Hospital) has been set for the graduates for clinical practice.
Who is Eligible for FMDC?
A basic set of criteria has been set for admission in FMDC. Take heed of the following points:
- All Pakistani citizens are free to apply.
- A minimum of 70 percent score in Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC), F.Sc (Pre-medical) or an equivalent examination having minimum of twelve years of education is acceptable.
- If you have taken a course form a foreign institute or university, the criterion remains the same i.e., a minimum score of seventy percent (70%) in the examination of the previous educational institute. Make sure your previous foreign course/degree had at least three science subjects i.e. biology, chemistry and either physics or mathematics.
- Certification of foreign course by the Inter-Boards Committee of Chairmen (IBCC) as equivalent to HSSC or F.Sc or intermediate level of Pakistan.

How to Apply for FMDC?
Every year in July, the college issues its admission and entry test dates in renowned newspapers and on its official website. The registration process remains open in July and August.
A comprehensive guide to facilitate you with the admission process has been given below. Follow these steps carefully:
Registration at the right site
FMDC is a subordinate body of SZABMU. So, the aspirants need to register themselves at the following website for securing a place amidst the lucky 100 for MBBS – http://www.szabmu.edu.pk/.
Use a Suitable Gadget
It’s better to switch to a laptop or a desktop computer to fill in the application form. Uploading documents and images become a lot easier this way.
Fill in academic and biographical details
The form asks for general information such as name, residential and permanent address, contact details etc. after filling these accurately, proceed to the section that asks for your academic records. Be vigilant while giving the academic details. Refer to your certificates to avoid contradictions and provide faulty percentages. Even a fractional part of 0.01 makes a difference in your rank in the merit list.
Bear in mind that on a single passport or CNIC, only one admission form can be filled and submitted.
Upload the documents
A piece of friendly advice. Before indulging in all sorts of admission forms for medical colleges and universities, keep a folder containing the scanned copies of your CNIC, educational certificates and a recent photograph on your desktop or in a USB.
For the application form for FMDC, you need all these documents properly scanned and uploaded on the site. Your degrees will be verified with the boards and examination bodies mentioned in the form. So, there’s absolutely no room for injustice or fraud very.
There’s no need to click that submit button before you’ve reviewed the application form at least twice. There’s no going back once the form has been submitted. Check in the smallest digit and letter you consider too trivial for a second read. Once you’re positive about the form, click that submit button.
Look for the serial number
Upon successful submission of the form, a unique serial number will be provided to the candidate. Note it down. Keep it safe. This number will be used in the future for accessing the admission form and getting hold of the details about the entry test.
Submission of Fee
Now, get to the nearest photocopier and get a printout of the challan form displayed after the submission of the admission form. Visit the designated bank and submit a non-refundable amount of Rs..2000.
Issuance of Admittance Card
Everything has been switched to a digital system for 2020. The admittance card details will be provided to the candidates via SMS / email. So, keep a check on your gadgets and mails every other day.
Choice of the Centre
FMDC has test centers in every major city of Pakistan – Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, Faisalabad, Muzaffarabad, and Sukkar. Candidates shall choose their centers bearing in mind their conveyance facilities and instructions. Every center has a capacity of merely 100 candidates. So be prepared for a little shuffle in your test center.
Candidates applying for FMDC need to fulfill the following conditions:
- Minimum 70% score in FSc pre-medical ro an equivalent qualification
- Minimum 60% score in the entry test
Depending upon the dates of conducting tests and the admission deadlines for other medical institutes, the merit lists vary in number. FMDC normally commences its classes for MBBS after displaying its 3rd or 4th merit list. However, more merit lists can be expected by the waiting candidates.
Points to remember
Pakistani students having passed from foreign education system (i.e. O levels, A levels, etc) in Pakistan shall not be eligible for foreign quota seats. The quota system works according to the population of each province and the registration influx of foreign students.
