I apologize ECAT has no selective syllabus given by UET or any other authority in Pakistan.
But!
We’ve outlined the topics that are commonly asked in the ECAT, in case, if you don’t have any preparation, this will prove a useful guide.
As you know ECAT is designed by the University of Engineering and Technology each year to assess students interested in BE, BS and related degrees in Pakistan.
The syllabus for the test comprises of the textbook material designed for students of FSc Pre Engineering, A-Levels and DAE. The syllabus thus encompasses topics from English, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, and even Biology.

Division of Marks
So, how does the scoring scheme work?
Technically, students shall only be examined in subjects like mathematics and physics since these are the only subjects that matter once we get enrolled in an engineering institute here. Wrong! With a growing need for interdisciplinary expertise and importance, it only makes sense that some other subjects get considerable weightage in ECAT as well.
The test comprises 100 MCQs each with 4 marks. Following is the division of MCQs in ECAT in our country:
- English – 10 MCQs
- Chemistry – 30 MCQs
- Physics – 30 MCQs
- Mathematics – 30 MCQs
English
The ECATians are the lucky ones. Trust me! With only 10% weightage given to this portion in the test, its preparation is relatively less stressful.
Subtopics
The English portion is further divided into
- Vocabulary
- Grammar
- Comprehension
Vocabulary
The vocabulary preparation consists of the traditional labyrinth of synonyms and antonyms even in ECAT. Key books and study materials by colleges and academies can aid the student in this regard.
Grammar
Brace yourselves for the seemingly tricky part, folks!
This part includes common topics like:
- Active and passive voice
- Narration (direct and indirect speech)
- Correct and incorrect word choice or sentences
- Detecting errors in a sentence
- Subject-verb agreement
- Putting into order the disarranged words in a sentence
- Sentence completion
- Punctuation
Comprehension
Comprehension basically refers to the understanding of an unseen i.e., previously unattempted passage and subsequently, answering the queries asked in the end. The questions may vary from the content to the vocabulary of the passage.
Chemistry
A lot of ECAT enthusiasts rush for subjects like physics and mathematics to prepare well for ECAT, calling them the decisive ones. Wrong! With this approach in mind, you’re likely to end up in a university you didn’t wish to get admitted to. You’ll end up losing your dream discipline in a dream university.
Why?
Because you’re arguing to prepare for only 60% of the test! The rest of the percentage is equally important to decide your future.
Chemistry and English are going to be the bonus points for you! The segment for chemistry in ECAT constitutes 30% constituting 30 MCQs, each with 4 marks.
The syllabus consists of the text given in the textbooks of the 1st and 2nd-year intermediate level. The course, as of 2019, consists of 27 whole chapters (11 from the book of Intermediate part I and 16 from Intermediate Part II). Without a doubt, preparing from both books is equally crucial in scoring well in ECAT.
Chapters Included
The important chapters included in the syllabus for ECAT are as follows:
- Aromatic hydrocarbons
- Alkyl halides
- Aldehydes
- Alcohols
- Atomic structure
- Basic concepts of chemistry
- Chemical equilibrium
- Chemical bonding
- Common chemical industries
- Carboxylic acids
- Electrochemistry
- Environmental chemistry
- Experimental techniques of chemistry
- Gases
- Ketones
- Liquids and solids
- Macromolecules
- Phenols and ethers
- Periodic classification of elements and periodicity
- Reaction kinetics
- Solutions
- Thermochemistry
Physics
We all understand physics and mathematics are the subjects that actually MATTER in engineering degrees. With this understanding, it only makes sense that thorough comprehension of these subjects and their concepts have the greatest value for the students of pre-engineering in FSc, A-Levels, and DAE.
With 30% weightage in ECAT, this portion encompasses 30 MCQs with 4 marks each for one MCQ. Bear in mind that just like MDCAT 2019, ECAT works on the policy of deducting 1 mark for each wrong answer.
The syllabus comprises 21 Chapters in total (11 from the First Year Physics textbook and 10 from the Second Year Physics textbook).
Chapters Included
Following are the important chapters included in the syllabus for Physics:
- Atomic spectra
- Alternating current
- Current electricity
- Circular motion
- Dawn of modern physics
- Electromagnetism
- Electronics
- Electrostatics
- Electronics
- Heat and thermodynamics
- Motion and force
- Measurement
- Nuclear physics
- Oscillations
- Physics of solids
- Vectors and equilibrium
- Waves
- Work
Mathematics
Here comes the comrade of formulae, obscure problems, and hefty solutions. The mathematics portion in ECAT holds 30 MCQs and has the same marking criterion as physics and chemistry.
Make sure you practice this portion extensively and endlessly. Without a profound understanding of all formulae and their applications, you’re likely to fall short of the score you have decided to achieve in ECAT.
The syllabus of mathematics for ECAT 2019 consists of following important chapters
From FSc part I mathematics textbook
- Application of trigonometry
- Fundamentals of trigonometry
- Inverse trigonometric functions
- Matrices and determinants
- Mathematical induction and binomial theorem
- Number system
