How to Manage Time and Finish Papers In Your Exams [Guide]

If you are struggling with managing time in your school or college exams?

Are you worried about board examination that you always have a problem in finishing exams on time?

First we will explain the problems, then solutions.

But Why Time Managment? Problems:

In this era, time is money, every second can make a difference between success and failure.Keetabi Baatain Na? (Bookish Talking?)

A medical Student is taking a Medical College Entrance Test, and he has to perform 100 MCQs in 2 hours, he manages to solve 99 questions on time and for 1 MCQ he runs out of time.

Bad Luck?

He takes 82 marks in the test. He secured an overall aggregate of 92.15% and his dream medical college closing merit was 92.2%. Now that 1 MCQ costs him admission.

Just one MCQ 😞

You might have heard students getting 999 marks in matriculation and unable to cross 1000 marks, they regret, every single mark counts, and every single mark can be increased by managing your time properly.

Therefore, time management in the examination is crucial for students seeking high marks.

However, sometimes it's not an issue for the students who write fast and are able to finish their paper well before the deadline.

In order to learn about managing time, we must first learn about students who need to manage their time and then after categorizing yourself in any of the categories, we can go for the solution.

The time management becomes important for some students like:
  • Slow Writers
  • Perfectionist
  • Slow Thinker
  • Weak in Remembering

1. Slow Writers:

There are lots of students who are slow writers including myself.

I always struggled with managing time. I hardly remember a day when I finished my paper on time or well before time.

My friends' views:

What were you doing in 3 hrs I had finished exams in 2 hrs.

'Ab tak toh main 1 ganta neend puri kar chuka hota' (I would have slept for one hour till now)

Such Students really struggle with time management and often worried about this problem.

2. Perfectionist:

Some students like to make their paper perfect in all aspects to achieve their target.

In this way, they waste a lot of time in decorating their answer sheet and providing irrelevant and extra details.

In this way, they end up skipping some questions due to short of time in the examination which cost them on the day of result.

Such students also need to manage time properly.

3. Slow Thinker:

Many students are slow at thinking and they need some time to think over a question. They spend most of their time in thinking the answer to the question or thinking about the method to be employed to solve the question. This thing consumes most of their time and they end up leaving questions in their examination.
Note: Although some students are very fast at writing yet they are not able to finish their paper on time because they are the slow thinker.
The worst case scenario, if you are a slow writer and also a slow thinker.  In my case, I was also a perfectionist and I always wanted to make my paper look good and I wrote extra undesired details in examinations.

4. Weak Students:

A few students are weak in studying things and they struggle in remembering answers of the question and most of the time forget the right answer.

Such students also complain about less time given in the paper and the paper being so lengthy.
Fortunately, I don't lie in this category, as I remember answers correctly although I require some time to think the correct answer.

There can be some other students and categories of students who require time management, but the majority of the students who struggle with time management lie in either of the division cited above.

How to Manage Time?  Solutions

So the million dollar question is how to manage time in examinations.

As I, myself struggled with managing time, and I had thought about managing time a lot. I also tried many experiments.

I came up with a simple solution which will be given in the upcoming lines.I used it and it works perfectly fine.

1. Division of Time:

Let say you have to solve a complete board examination in 3 hours.

You have 25 minutes to solve 20 MCQs in English Paper.

You just divide it like this:

I will solve 10 MCQs in 12 Minutes and the remaining 10 MCQs in 12 minutes. You will end up solving 20 MCQs with 1 minutes still left. You can use that 1 minute to think over a difficult MCQ.

You have 2 hr and 30 minutes to solve a paper in which you have 15 shorts answers and 3 long questions.

You can use 1 hr and 30 minutes for short questions.

90/15= 6 minutes for Each short answer

You have 1 hour to 3 long questions.

Here are your options:

Q1: 20 Minutes
Q2: 20 Minutes
Q3: 20 Minutes

(Kuch Sawal lengthy hoty hain! Acha) (Some questions are lengthy, Okay)

Q1: 30 Minutes
Q2: 15 Minutes
Q3: 15 Minutes

What No? Okay

Q1: 25 Minutes
Q2: 15 Minutes
Q3: 20 Minutes

Note: Time for Exam = Total Time - Tolerance
Tolerance is explained later in the article.
You can divide your time as per following factors:

2. Length of Question

You can give more time to lengthy question and less to short questions.

3. Marks of Questions

You would want to give more time to the questions which carry more marks. Give less time to the question which carries least marks.

Whatever your division is, it totally depends upon you and the paper which you are taking. There is no hard and fast rule for the division of your time for the paper. You can select any division.

4. Implementation of Division

Most of you must be thinking right now that this is not a big deal I can do that division and I had divided my paper in different time interval yet I was not able to manage time.

So, In order to make sure that you perform according to your division of time you need a wristwatch.

Yes! But I have a wristwatch I am still not able to manage time.

Decide a time interval of your desired time, let say 10 Minutes, what you need to do is that you have to check your watch every 10 Minutes and then make sure that you have to go according to the plan if at any moment you think that you are going slow just speed up your pace.

Make sure you are checking your watch at the regular interval which you have decided if you have decided that I will check watch after 20 Minutes, it's up to you how long interval you want. But you have to make sure that you are checking your watch.

If you are solving MCQs then you can reduce this time to 2 Minutes or 5 minutes.

This thing will make sure that you are going according to the division of your time and if you will be going slow it will not only enable you to accelerate your paper but also let you know if you are going too fast.

5. Tolerance/Uncertainty

It is always a best practice that while dividing your time you select a tolerance as a part of your time can be wasted in marking your attendance, reading instructions and you can be stuck at some place.

In order to make sure that you cater this problem you can select a tolerance of the desired value.
For example, if you have 180 minutes or 3 hrs to solve the paper and you select a tolerance of 5%.

(180x5)/100 = 9 Minutes
If you select Tolerance of 2%.
(180x2)/100 = 3.6 Minutes
If you select tolerance of 3%.
(180x3)/100 = 5.4 Minutes

It is completely up to you whatever the tolerance you want to select.

If you are selecting 5% Tolerance in 3 hrs paper.

Time for Exam= 180-9 = 171 Minutes

Now, you can divide your time considering that you have 171 Minutes for the Exams. Divide this time for solving your paper.

By applying the above method in your paper in any examination you will able to manage your time properly.
Good Luck!
